A parallel...

I have an idea for a fantastic new business!!!

I am going to go into the toilet tissue game.

I am going to sell a toilet paper printed with your choice of Christ on the Cross or the Virgin Mary. Choose according to your sexual preference (or bowel condition if you like).

Scented with frankincense and myrhh (well sandalwood and artificial ambergris anyway) it is sure to be popular with the whole Christian movement. I have written to Il Papa for his endorsement, enclosing four sample rolls.

I wonder how long it will take for the first death threats to arrive and for my factory to be burnt down.

How many death threats were received by the 'artists' who produced "Piss Christ" and the image of the Virgin Mary in fecal matter and surrounded by close-ups of female genetalia? I didn't hear about any. Yes, people were upset, but actual death threats? Oh, and how many were actually carried out? Likewise, I think you would not receive death threats for starting your business. However, even if you did you'd still lose this little contest simply because there will be no bands of rioting Christians burning the New Zealand embassy in Rome.

Islam needs to grow up and leave the 7th century. It is perfectly acceptable to be angry when someone insults you or something you hold dear. Heck, it's even sometimes appropriate to punch the insulter right in the nose. Burning down public buildings and actually carrying out assassinations (Theo van Gogh) are not, however, acceptable.

So, can we dispense with the moral relativism? The outrage that may very well erupt over your business would not rise to the level of the response over these cartoons (or van Gogh's movie). And even if it did, do you think that Christian leaders around the world would condone such violence or even sit idly by like Islamic clerics have done? I think not.

Doesn't acting as an apologist for a brutal religion get a little uncomfortable when you consider the role you would personally play in a world where Islam ruled?

Now where were the eeeevil Joos on this one? Why no towering mushroom clouds where Cairo once stood?

I suggest you add a third product, Mohammad. We will see whether Christians or Muslims are more likely to send you death threats.

Of course we can contrast the fate of Theo Van Gogh with that of Martin Scorsese to get a quick answer.
