Random quote...

No, sorry, hat tip to Jack Grant over at Random Fate -
Compassion is not weakness, and concern for the unfortunate is not socialism.
- Hubert Humphrey

To which I will add -
In April 1938 [Michael Joseph] Savage outlined the government's social security proposals... he started to use the term 'applied Christianity' to describe the government's scheme...

Compassion and Social Security have little if anything in common.

Compassion is an individual effort which attempts to alleviate the load of another or at least lend them a shoulder to cry on.

Social Security is a Ponzi Scheme created by the government, the big lie is perpetuated and will eventually collapse on itself.

I fear sounding contrarian like Probligo and am not as inclined as he in getting tacit death threats lined up in the streets of Texas and wherever Ol' Al hails, but compassion and social security do have something in common, Stern.

They are not available when you need them. There you go!

Oops, did I hear the New Zealand sheep baying for my blood?

I stand by my earlier remarks.

Not at all, Eugene, not at all.

My personal experience as a user of NZ's social security (18 months unemployed, major cardiac surgery) is that it generally works reasonably well. I would not to depend upon it entirely.

I look forward to my retirement and being able to "reclaim" all of those taxes paid over the past 40 years in the form of a small pension to supplement my (fairly meagre) savings.

I have to be careful in replying to TF, because I am aware of the work he and his family do in the community. I confess to some admiration of him. The problem is that he would be in a fairly small (very small in this country) generous minority.
