In the aftermath of Ivan...

To any and all in the southeast states, Alabama and Florida in particular, my personal note of sympathy and support following the storms of the past month. Having been through the equivalent of a Category 2 storm myself I know a little of their experience.

On the radio this morning they had a three or four minute item describing the scene at a supermarket carpark with a large number of people waiting for the delivery of ice and water. There was the long wait -some had been queueing for five hours or more. There was the dispute over late arrivals starting "their own queue" instead of joining on the end.

At the end of the item, recorded some two hours later, the ice and water had still not arrived.

But an icecream street vendor in his truck had...

I watched on the news this morning how the former hurricane has affected areas much further inland. They showed a city in Ohio (hundreds of miles from the coast). Rain caused flooding so the entire city was flooded to about a meter and a half. Historic buildings were covered in mud. It was bad looking.

I can't imagine what it must be like. (Iowa had some horrific flooding in 1993, but I was uphill for the most part.)
